The craze for IIM and IIT

During lunch hour a colleague shared a story about another fellow colleague who was rejected during interview round for IIM, this colleague had this craze for IIM where he wanted to do his MBA from IIM only, he did not even attempt for admission to any other prestigious schools in India.

This story reminded of similar craze I observed during my schooling in Delhi. I was in Delhi for a year to prepare for IIT. I was enrolled into FIIT-JEE – one of the biggest cram schools in India. While at FIIT-JEE I observed how students spent multiple precious years of their life to clear a tough entrance exam. Several of my hostel mates were trying to clear IIT entrance exam for more than 3 years. These students who spent multiple years to clear IIT entrance exam were mostly from Bihar. They would take admission in some local college for BSc (Bachelor of Science) in physics or maths and in parallel continue IIT preparation.
