Story of man who retired young

While residing at Cherry Hill, NJ in 2013, I met an elderly couple who hailed from Vadodara Gujarat. They were may be in late 50s or early 60s. They were visting their daughter and son in law who were both doctors in Philadelphia.

Cherry Hill is at the border of New Jersey and Pennsylvania, you have to just cross a bridge to get into Pennsylvania from Cherry Hill, NJ.

Old man shared an interesting story about his career in India. In his youth he was employed with a semi government enterprise in Vadodara. The name of enterprise was HMT – Hindustan Machine Tools. Once there was a labor strike at the manufacturing facility and the semi government facility was permanently shut down.

All employees were given early retirement. As a full time employee of the enterprise, he was retired too but he had never to work again. All employees were given life long monthly pensions by government of India.

Old man shared that how he never took any other employment after that as pension was enough to run his household. He followed some of his hobbies but was never employed again, his wife though worked as a government employee and was about to retire soon.
